News
Carver County, Minnesota, is renowned for its exceptional quality of life for families and persons in numerous lifestages. The combination of picturesque natural landscapes and proximity to the Twin Cities fosters a reputation as one of the healthiest and happiest counties in Minnesota
The availability of abundant housing options is a key factor in this attractiveness. To ensure residents have access to suitable living arrangements, the Carver County Community Development Agency (CDA) is dedicated to providing a variety of housing options, including workforce, senior, and affordable housing.
This diversity not only supports the county's growth but also contributes to its vitality, showcased in numerous recent accolades for its livability, highlighting a commitment to fostering a healthy, happy, and supportive environment for its residents. One aspect of that recognition came in 2024, as the CDA was honored with two Awards of Merit by the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) for its partnerships toward enhancing housing support services.
Promoting Fair Housing in Carver County
Fair housing practices and inclusive communities are a priority in Carver County, with the CDA committing resources to develop fair and affordable housing options while ensuring protection from discrimination based on race, religion, sex, disability, or other characteristics.
One example was a HOME Line Landlord Tenant Law training hosted by the CDA in late March for managers and service providers at the Chaska Event Center. The presentation was an update of landlord tenant laws that went into effect over the last couple of years.
By raising awareness of fair housing rights and responsibilities, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and implementing innovative solutions, Carver County can remain a leader in fair housing practices and create a more inclusive and prosperous region for all.

Fair Housing Month
The CDA’s dedication is even more pertinent in April with Fair Housing Month, held each year to recognize the Fair Housing Act, enacted in 1968 as part of the Civil Rights Act, to promote fair housing practices and create inclusive communities.
The Fair Housing Act was passed in response to widespread housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability. Before its enactment, many communities across the country faced discriminatory housing practices that limited housing options for marginalized groups.
This landmark piece of legislation prohibits discrimination in selling, renting, and financing housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability. This law ensures that everyone has equal access to housing opportunities.
Economic Benefits of Fair Housing: Driving Growth and Opportunity
Fair housing plays a crucial role in fostering economic development and driving business growth while creating diverse and inclusive communities. Studies have shown that diverse communities are more economically resilient and attractive to businesses and talent. Through the realization of diverse neighborhoods, the Fair Housing Act contributes to the overall social and economic well-being of communities across the United States. The Act also provides legal recourse for individuals discriminated against in housing transactions, ensuring they can seek justice and receive appropriate remedies. Overall, the Fair Housing Act promotes equality, affordability, and opportunity in housing, benefiting individuals, communities, and society.
